Bono, Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen and The Edge, in one word, U2, appeared on the southwest corner of 53rd Street and Broadway Tuesday along with Mayor Michael Bloomberg in order to unveil the street sign "U2 Way." Each member of the band received his own version of the street sign "U2 Way," which Bono jokingly said marked the first time guitarist the Edge was able to hold a street sign without being arrested for it.
West 53rd Street west of Broadway will keep the name for one week while the band is in town to appear each night on CBS' "The Late Show with David Letterman."
The rock band released its 12th studio album, "No Line on the Horizon," Tuesday and is gearing up for a worldwide tour to begin in July. Produced by Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois and Steve Lillywhite, who have helped define and refine U2's unmistakable yet ever-evolving sound, the album features music written by the band with Eno and Lanois. The result is tracks with both anthemic sweep and intricate nuance.
One of the year's most eagerly anticipated albums, Horizon is garnering raves for brazen and byzantine sonic architecture that rises from U2's familiar foundation of heartfelt rock. The 11-track disc found the Irish foursome recording in Morocco, then in Dublin and later in New York and London.
But despite the fact that the album has just been released the band is already talking about a "companion album" which will be released later this year. Speaking to the New York Times, lead singer Bono confirmed that the as-yet-untitled disc was drawn from the Horizon sessions, and is "more meditative and processional in tone."
