The two skiers from San Francisco
who went missing Saturday near Lake Tahoe were
found by the rescue team on Monday morning, according to authorities. The two
survived the two nights huddled up in snow caves eating energy bars.
Patrick Frost, 35, a sales account
executive for the San Jose Sharks, and Christopher Gerwig, 32, a sous chef at a San Francisco
restaurant, were found by a helicopter from the Placer County Sheriff's
Department around 10:40 a.m. on Monday ten miles from the Alpine Meadows ski
resort, west of Lake Tahoe, near a place
called Upper Hell Hole Reservoir.
The two skiers said that they went on top of the mountain
and wanting to go down, they’ve left the ski boundaries without even knowing because
of the snow which fell heavily on Saturday and Sunday in that region.
They wanted to ski down Estelle Bowl and meet their friends
at the bottom, but the storm dropped about 2 feet of snow and covered
everything.
Gerwig said: "It was such a whiteout
you couldn't see 15 feet in front of you," San Francisco Chronicle.
He said that they thought they were
still on the ski boundary.
“We never saw a sign or a rope line, which is what you
usually see if you're out of bounds, but it was such a whiteout we could have
passed it and not seen it. Turns out we had already gone down drainage. By
then, we never could have climbed back up,” Gerwig added.
The two managed to build a snow cave
and shelter for the night and had three energy bars with them from which they
took small bites occasionally. They’ve drank snow melted in plastic bags and
they’ve tried to stay hydrated and dry as much as possible they could.
Frost said: "We never ever
considered giving up. We were going to make it," Associated Press reports.
When they’ve realized they were out of the ski boundaries
and that they were lost, they’ve decided to follow a waterway leading to a
reservoir. That’s when the helicopter spotted them.
The two men were taken to the Sutter Auburn
Faith Hospital
where they were treated for minor frostbite to their toes and afterwards were
released.
A dozen relatives and friends surrounded the men at the Placer County sheriff's
office in Auburn.
Lindsey Dazel, 29, Frost's fiancée,
was among them. The two set their wedding date on October 4.
She said: "We might do it sooner.
Just to say, 'I love you, you're mine.' "
