Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
Incorporated (MGM) has announced that they were planning to purchase the
film rights to a Three Stooges production from Warner Brothers, which have
been working on the project for several years now.
Screenwriters and directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly are
scheduled to direct the movie, which is to be based on the two brothers’ own
script, MGM having stated that they hoped to be able to release the production in
November 2009. The media company has been showcasing features of Larry, Moe and
Curly since as early as 1933, the future movie being said to be broken down
into four 20-minute shorts, the approximate length of the original slapstick comedy
shows.
Peter and Bobby Farrelly have divided their script into two
different plot lines, which first show the three 7-year-old brothers in a
orphanage run by nuns, giving the latter a hard time and eventually getting
kicked out and afterwards feature Larry, Moe and Curly trying to cope with the
humdrum of the modern era.
MGM has yet to begin lining up stars to fill in the shoes of
the comedy trio.
The Three Stooges vaudeville and comedy act originally
featured Moe Howard, brother Shemp Howard and longtime friend of the two Larry
Fine, but Shemp was later replaced by brother Curly Howard until 1946, when the
latter suffered a stroke and Shemp rejoined the cast.
The Farrelly brothers’ works include „Dumb and Dumber,” „There’s
Something About Mary,” „Me, Myself and Irene” and „The Heartbreak Kid.”
