NBC has won the most recent weekly Nielsen Media ratings race with the most-watched Super Bowl ever! After examining the numbers more closely, NBC released a report of Nielsen Media Research on Tuesday which shows the fact that 151.6 million persons watched all or at least six minutes of the telecast of Super Bowl XLIII from Tampa.
An average of 98.7 million people reportedly watched the entire duration of the game. Last year's Super Bowl XLII, previously the most-watched Super Bowl aired by Fox, in which the New York Giants upset the New England Patriots, gathered around 97.5 million.
This year’s game, in which the Pittsburgh Steelers eked out a win over the Arizona Cardinals, became the most-watched Super Bowl ever and the second telecast of all time, following the 1983 series finale of "MASH" which averaged 106 million viewers and remains the "most-watched television broadcast in history" based on average viewership.
Most media outlets were reporting on Monday that the Super Bowl XLIII fell short of last year, but Tuesday’s full ratings results turned the story upside down. The explanation is that Nielsen's Monday numbers were actually preliminary results. These early statistics are always followed by further review and often rise after Nielsen considers additional data. Therefore, Alan Wurtzel, NBC's president of research and media development, said that the final report card was accurate.
