Many months before the Sundance Film Festival even began there were talks about the relaxed atmosphere from 2009. It seems that many thought that the 2009 festival will be poor in audience because of the economic crisis. Emma Roberts said, while lounging at the EW loft, that she really enjoys the calm and relaxed atmosphere. The actress added that going to the premiere of her movie in jeans and T-shirt is fabulous.
The premiere Roberts was talking about was for “Lifetime,” a drama drawn in the 1970s, which tells the story of a little boy who fights his dysfunctional family while his best friend watches his father dying of Lyme disease. Roberts said that she felt more heart in the independent movies. She now has “Lifetime” and “The Winning Season” at the Sundance Film Festival and “Hotel for Dogs” in theatres now. “The Winning Season” premieres on Monday at Sundance.
Jill Hennessy was also one of the directors and actors who enjoyed the quiet atmosphere at the festival. He said that there had been less important parties and media events so that the people who actually came to see the movies were also the ones who discussed about them after they finished.
Dominic Monaghan promoted his Slam dance horror comedy “I Sell the Dead” while journalists were trying to get some words about the movie. He said that these kinds of events and jobs make you stay on all the time. While changing his voice into a silly one at the end of the interviews, Monaghan said he was just "an old man who's just over most things."
“Taking Chance,” directed by Kevin Bacon, was one of the movies which didn’t catch up with the more muted festival. The film was based on the true story about a Marine which was supposed to bring the remains of an Iraqi soldier home. Bacon said that the festival has become more of a market sale because of the rise of a pseudo-black market in DVD screeners of Sundance films that circulate before the festival.
Yet, the “Rudo y Cursi” was the movie which kept the atmosphere way up high. The comedy about brothers and Mexican soccer was produced by Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo Del Toro and was written and directed by Alfonso's brother Carlos Cuarón. “Rudo y Cursi” stars Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal, and besides Luna, all the crew was there to celebrate the premiere of the movie.
Among the few people who always make Sundance Film Festival so appealing for the moviemakers, the “Rudo y Cursi” team announced their next big project, the co-writing and directing “The Hobbit.” Lots of food and wine poured after the movie premieres while everybody was enjoying the nice and calm atmosphere Sundance has come with this year.
