Helen Thomas is a member of the White House press corps who
was always present at the presidential press conferences. She not only opened
and closed the event, but asked pertinent questions as well.
"Thank You, Mr. President: Helen Thomas at the White
House” is a documentary which premieres on HBO tonight. It is actually an
interview with Thomas taken by documentary maker Rory Kennedy at her mother
Ethel Kennedy's home. And it features her personal opinions and stories about
her experiences around the latest U.S.A. Presidents, from John F.
Kennedy to George W. Bush.
The film is about 40 minutes long but quite concentrated on
spicy interesting details about U.S.A.’s
latest and most notorious Presidents. It also presents how her parents moved to
America from Tripoli as well as her early childhood in Detroit. "I never had any idea I would
go to the White House, but I certainly wanted to cover history and not fires in
Detroit,"
Thomas said in the documentary.
For instance she refers to George W. Bush as "the worst
president in American history." Ronald Reagan was "very affable - but
very, very distant," or Jimmy Carter, who "missed his calling…would
have been a great minister."
Helen Thomas is no longer a reporter nowadays. She quit United
Press International and now works as a columnist for the Hearst papers.
“The thing about Helen is she's asking the questions that we
the public want to know the answers to," Rory Kennedy said about her. This
documentary’s maker name is not just a coincidence, as she is the daughter of
U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Skakel Kennedy.
