The Six-Hour Long Baseball Game

Last night, the Colorado Rockies managed to beat the host San Diego Padres with 2 to 1 in the longest game in the majors in almost 15 years.

Award winner Jake Peavy threw the first pitch at 19:05 and the game ended after 6 hours and 16 minutes at 1:21 a.m. Friday.

It is the longest game since August 31, 1993, when Cleveland lost to Minnesota in 22 innings. The score was 5-4.

"That was an incredible baseball game," Padres manager Bud Black said according to the Associated Press. "It will go down as one that everybody who was here, will never forget it."

Manager Clint Hurdle was quoted saying: "This was a good game to get outside yourself. About the 16th inning, I said, 'Hey boys, no matter what's in front of us, there's a world of people out there who've got harder rows to hoe than we do. No matter what happens the rest of the night, have some fun with this thing.' "After the inspiring speech and six more innings, his players managed to score a run.

Hurdle’s suggestion was very appropriate, mostly because after the first few hours the fatigue was beginning to show and in order to keep the spirit up and the players connected to the game, a lighter approach was needed.

The previous longest game of the season by innings was 15 and happened on April 9 when the Cubs beat the Pirates 6-4 in Pittsburgh. The longest in time was between Toronto and Texas, which ended after a 4-hour and 53-minutes-game. Texas won 7-5 in 14 innings.
