According to a study completed by the Pew Internet &
American Life Project, close to 50 percent of all internet users use the search
engines on a daily basis. The 49 percent shows a massive growth in terms of
popularity for search engines, as back in 2002 only a third of Web users frequently
visited such sites.
The only activity which surpasses visiting the search
engines is checking for emails, with 60 percent of the Internet users logging on
to their email accounts every day.
The study also noted that users with some college education,
a certain amount of experience in Web browsing and incomes greater than $50,000
are the most likely to access search engines on a daily basis and that this
action has become far more popular than looking for news or verifying the
weather prognosis.
The percentage of men using search engines grew from 33 percent
in 2002 to 53 percent today and the percentage of women reached 45 percent from
2002’s 25 percent.
One of the explanations offered for the search engine usage phenomenon
is that the constantly upgraded speeds of Internet connections combined with a
large variety of search platforms, implemented more and more on individual Web sites,
facilitate an easy access to information and as people are always looking to be
quickly informed with reliable information, the searches manage to deliver just
that.
There is no doubt that the Web search engine has become one
of the essential tools used by the everyday internet user and the further development
of its platforms will surely be as useful as it will be profitable.
