According to recent reports, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is shipping 660,000 new commercial meals kits to storm victims from Kentucky and Arkansas. The products are manufactured by Boca Grande Foods and assembled by Red Cloud Food Services.
“Commercial meals kits manufactured by Red Cloud Food Services Inc., under the Standing Rock label, have been provided to disaster survivors in impacted communities, and these kits may contain peanut butter which is part of the precautionary national recall underway in accordance with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration,” FEMA explained in a statement.
Last month, the Food and Drug Administration announced a nationwide outbreak of salmonella poisoning that was blamed for the death of six people and more than 470 cases of illnesses in 43 states. The outbreak was traced to a Georgia plant. The Food and Drug Administration made a report on the conditions at Georgia peanut processing plant and discovered roaches, mold on the factory’s ceilings, dirty utensils, filthy equipment used in making the paste, holes in the roof and all the necessary conditions for causing such a dangerous salmonella outbreak.
More than 400 products have been recalled from American, Canadian and even European shelves in response to the salmonella contamination.
Consumers with concerns over peanut butter products are advised to address with local health officials and/or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and FDA.
FEMA said it has not received any complaints about illnesses related to peanut butter products.
Annually there are 1.4 million salmonella cases in the US and 400 deaths. The symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever and cramping; the illness usually lasts between 4 and 7 days.
