The Russian suspected of killing 48 people was found guilty by a Russian jury on Wednesday. Alexander Pichushkin, a grocery clerk in everyday life, has killed mainly elderly whom he "ritually" plied with alcohol and bludgeoned to death.
The serial killer acknowledged his crimes and added that he actually killed more than 48. The prosecutors said the investigation over Pichushkin’s 11 additional murders will be carried out because it would be unjust to overlook them, news agency Interfax reported.
In accordance with Pichushkin confessions, he killed 63 people. He began with the murder of a classmate in 1992 and since then he kept the count of his victims on a chessboard.
"A first killing is like your first love. You never forget it," he said from the defendant's cage, Interfax reported.
The reading of the verdict that declared Pichushkin guilty of the 48 murders and of three counts of attempted murder took the jury about three hours. Contrary to all expectations, the psychiatrists said Pichushkin is sane and responsible for his actions, thus determining the Jury to say the serial killer deserves no leniency, Interfax reported. He will serve life in jail.
Most of the victims were murdered between 2001 and 2006. The majority of them were Pichushkin’s acquaintances and a part of the "ritual" was to ply them with alcohol before bludgeoning them to death. He has lured the unfortunate victims to drink at the grave of his dog in the Bittsevsky Park of Moscow. There he hit them in the head from behind or pushed them into open sewers.
The "Bittsevsky Maniac" was attempting to fill al the 64 squares of his chessboard, but he was finally caught after one of his co-workers, which he murdered, left a note at home to her son writing her plans to go for what proved to be her last walk.
