“It is never too late to rock!” is definitely the theme of
this film which evolves around a rock band drummer, but which it does not rock
at all. “The Rocker” is a film which lavishes a good idea by playing it too
safely.
The story evolves around rock band drummer named Fish
Fishman ("The Office’s" Rainn Wilson) who played for a hot hair band that
were very close to sign an important record deal, but fell short due to some
execs-relative scheme. The idea of the movie’s introductive part is that Fish
never recovered from that disappointment.
However, as the story continues, ten years later he moves in
with relatives. His nephew Matt, played by Josh Gad, makes his own rock band,
which consists of frontman guitarist Curtis (played by Teddy Geiger) and bass
player Amelia (played by "Superbad’s"Emma Stone).
It’s not that hard to guess how the story continues. The
young rock band has no drummer, needs one, so Fish ends up playing drums for
the youngsters.
But when the film comes to the scenes where the rock band
should kick ass with their stage performances, they inexplicably play it safe.
The continuation of the film is, of course, pretty easy to anticipate: the band
has its big breakthrough, Fish wants to party heavy, while the younger members
of the band need chaperones.
“The Rocker” (script by Maya Forbes and Wallace Wolodarsky)
is a film that won’t rock you, that’s for sure.
