The Pepper Spray Heist

Bank robberies are usually a great subject for movies in which some greasy bad boys, dressed in leather jackets and ski masks are acting tough, put their hands on the loot and quickly drive away in a black van.

Well, the thing is that movies can sometimes intersect with reality as an ingenious scheme to rob the Bank of America in Monroe was put into action recently. But this is not what you see in movies, there were no gunshots, no leather jackets, no tough men. This was all about cold blood, hard planning and, of course, an inner tube.

The plan was simple, yet ingenious. The robber hired, through Craiglist, workers for road maintenance promising a juicy $28.50 per hour. The add specified that the workers should be wearing a yellow vest, a respirator mask and, if possible, a blue shirt. Do you see where this is going?

The robber, wearing the exact same outfit as the workers he “hired”, pepper sprayed the guard who was unloading the cash from the armored truck to get it into the bank, took the money and made a run for it. The police say he escaped though an inner tube and probably from there he used a motor boat as a getaway vehicle.

The dozen of yellow vest wearing “henchmen” were used as decoys as the robber escaped causing confusion among police officers and bank guards. The amount of cash the robber managed to get away with remains unknown to the general public. This is sure to put even more pressure on Craiglist, which already was in a hot spot because of strange ads promoting vandalism or, even, discrimination.

Of course, Craiglist is not responsible for the contents of its ads, as the company is merely a provider of a service. Police say Craiglist might be one of the most reliable ways to catch the robber by finding out the identity of the person who posted the respective add.
