The Pants Still Fit And The Sisterhood Is Unbreakable

Comedy lovers are already accustomed and have taken a liking to the “Sex and the City” gals. But now, they are re-introduced to another, gentler foursome that forcefully hits the big screen.

Yes, I’m talking about the charming jeunes filles from “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2,” a catchy funny movie that is expected to enjoy a smashing success.

Based on the best-selling young adult novels by Ann Brashares, the comedy-drama continues the story of four lifelong friends who can all fit into a magical pair of jeans even though they're all different shapes and sizes. The thrilling garment links the characters portrayed by “Gossip Girl” Blake Lively, “Ugly Betty” Carmen Ferrera, former “Gilmore Girl” Alexis Bledel and “Joan of Arcadia’s” Amber Tamblyn.

So, if the plot doesn’t appeal to you, think about the chemistry of the cast, which makes the movie worth seeing.

Directed by Sanna Hamri, the sequel to the 2005 film “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” makes an incursion into the lives of the four young women.

As a perfect friendship would have been far-fetched, the sisterhood between the characters isn’t flawless. Now that les belles have experienced more than they did before, they regard their amity with a touch of concern, having difficulties in maintaining the beautiful friendship that linked them in high school. However, instead of discussing about the aloofness, they shut down, learning to tackle the problems themselves.

Bridget, student at Brown University, is a willful, athletic soccer star who has discovered another passion and is now spending the summer holiday on an archeological dig in Turkey.

Tibby, the rebellious daughter of two former radicals, an artsy videographer and the most compelling character in the group, is working part-time at a video store.

Meanwhile, the caring Carmen, who is at Yale, spends most of her time working backstage at a theater festival in Vermont. Of the four Sisters, she is the most insistent on keeping them together, thus she longs for a short return in their hometown.

Last but not least, Lena is heartbroken after her romance with the Greek lad that swept her off her feet in the first movie ends and wants to draw a blank by attending some summer art classes at the Rhode Island School of Design. (Only to fall in love with an artist’s model.)

The four friends’ lives aren’t picture-perfect. They cope with serious issues, such as a pregnancy scare, relationship problems, family breakup and backstabbing. However, they finally agree that the most important thing is to stick together because they have so much in common and have been through so many situations together that made them realize that a friend in need is a friend indeed.

Obviously, the movie also stars males, although they are secondary. Leonardo Nam (“The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift”), Tom Wisdom, Michael Rady (“The Guardian”) and Jesse Williams (“Greek”) count among them.

Shohreh Aghdashloo (“The House of Sand and Fog”), Kyle MacLachlan and Blythe Danner are also supporting actors.

Although the film is light, sentimental and has a predictable ending, moviegoers should stop sitting on a fence and block the entrance of cinemas. So, don’t miss the encounter with the young girls in this fusion of humor, drama and romance!
