Porsche announced on Monday that
it was currently developing a hybrid prototype version of its highly
anticipated Panamera four-door GT. The Panamera Hybrid prototype will use the
same gas-electric drive concept as Porsche’s other hybrid car, Cayenne; the company claims a 30% reduction
of fuel consumption.
According to the popular car
maker, the new Hybrid is to feature a parallel hybrid system that can run on
both combustion and electricity, or on one of these two drive systems alone. Porsche
reportedly said that "This flexibility results in benefits such as a zero
emissions driving mode, fuel savings in both city and highway driving and
maximum performance when desired."
The Panamera Hybrid’s battery
unit will be positioned bellow the luggage compartment and its hybrid model
will be found between the engine and transmission. The hybrid module, comprised
of an additional clutch and electric motor, will have the ability to choose
between the combustion engine and the electric motor, or to combine the both
drive systems as one joint power unit.
Panamera is the German car
manufacturer’s fourth model line and it is scheduled to debut in 2009. Porsche promised
to redefine the GT (Gran Turismo) category through these new cars, by mixing
Porsche’s traditional driving dynamics with a unique design package that will
afford generous front and rear space, as well as seating comfort.
