A report put together by the Nielsen Media Research group, adding up the figures from January to October of 2008, states that the PlayStation 2 is by far the most used console, with 30.2 percent.
According to the research, the Xbox 360 takes second place with 18.3 percent and the Wii is the third with 13.5 percent. The top continues with Xbox’s 9.1 percent, PlayStation 3’s 7.7 percent and GameCube’s 4.4 percent, while the other available game consoles add up to a total of 16.9 percent.
Looking at 2007’s figures, when the PS2 led the pack with 42 percent, some might say that the company is loosing its appeal; the fact is that Sony decided to focus all of its efforts on the next-generation PS3 console and turn it into a massive worldwide hit. This is not an easy task, but so far, the results show a slow but constant improvement, with the PS3 at 7.7 percent from last year’s 2.5 percent.
The Wii has also improved its numbers, reaching 13.5 percent from the previous 5.5 percent and the Xbox 360 jumped from 12 percent to 18.3 percent.
The report also presents the list for the most-played games, where the number one spot came as no surprise - World of Warcraft has the biggest appeal, with each player spending an average of 671 minutes every week on the game (0.723 % of all gamers). Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is second with 404 minutes every week (0.163 % of gamers) while the third most-played PC game is the original Halo, with 295 minutes per week.
