The Osbournes’ Garage Sale Raises Thousands For Charity

Ozzy Osbourne and his wife Sharon made the most of the stuff they no longer needed in their Beverly Hills mansion, by auctioning them all off and giving the money to charity.

Nearly 600 items, including pieces which were featured in the MTV reality show "The Osbournes," were sold during a two-day "garage sale" which started Friday, earning a massive $800,000 for the Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

"We had Ozzy fans bidding against these sophisticated fine art buyers, which you don't see every day," said Darren Julien, whose company, Julien's Auctions, ran the charity sale. "For the most part the metalheads were outbidding the art crowd."

Various bidders showed up for the event, which was web-cast live on www.auctionnetwork.com, to take their pick on the Osbournes’ belongings.

"Everything has a memory," Sharon Osbourne, 55, said, referring to offerings that include Ozzy's leather pants, black cape and signature dark glasses as well as a gilded Buddha statue and her diamond rings. A dining room table used by guests such as Elton John and Elizabeth Taylor was estimated to be worth about 3,800 pounds.

According to Julien, "The Osbourne factor more than doubled the value of some items," and the couple's broad fanbase was, "unlike anything we have ever seen by record numbers of bidder registrations," he added.

While a dog bed given by Elton John to Sharon as a gift sold for $2,375, fine art buyers were interested in items like a sculpture by French artist Edouard Drouot ($10,500) and a painting by Gabriel Joseph Marie Augustin Ferrier ($5,312).

"For a celebrity garage sale, it was pretty spectacular," Julien said.

The couple, who are set to host next year’s Brit awards ceremony in London on February 20th, decided they didn’t need most of their stuff especially since their children, Jack and Kelly, recently moved out.

"Well, the kids have left, and we have a new house with completely different décor. As you get older, your tastes change. We've definitely gone through the Goth phase. Now, Ozzy and I have gone more contemporary, more streamlined, stark modern and light. No more black furniture. We're moving into simplicity, and I am trying to educate myself that less is more. I'm a hoarder by nature, but having five storage rooms on two continents is a complete nightmare," Sharon Osbourne was quoted by Los Angeles Times as saying.

Although she admitted she felt bad about leaving some of the things behind, Sharon said she was ready to move on, despite everyone else’s pleas to keep the stuff.

"I got to a stage in my life where I've got to stop being a hoarder and a collector. I got great enjoyment over the years of collecting all this stuff," she said, adding: "But now I look at it and go – silly old cow – what are you doing with these collections? Just let it go."
