After a staggering E3 performance where Nintendo announced the
release of a better Wiimote, the Wii Motion Plus, the gaming colossus revealed
at a press conference in Tokyo the new version of the DS, the DSi. Nintendo fans will be thrilled to know that
the DSi is slimmer, bigger and has a couple more functions than the old version
of the portable console.
The differences between the DS Lite and the DSi are subtle,
but consistent. The DSi will be equipped with two digital cameras, from which
the outer camera will have a 3 megapixel resolution. The DSi will also have a
Wi-Fi connection, to be used for downloading games from a special Nintendo
store, like the Wii Shop Channel, only smaller, and a built-in microphone.
Gamers must know that purchasing games online for the DS can be done by using
points, games ranging from free to 800 points. The DSi will be sold with 1000
points, which can be used in any way the buyer wants.
Compatibility-wise, the new DS can run software specific to
the DS Lite, but since it is not equipped with a GBA slot the DSi will be
unable to run games for the Gameboy Advanced. Also, the DS Lite will not be
able to run software designed specifically for the DSi. Another good thing
about the new tiny console is that it can recharge its battery faster than the
DS Lite, in just 2 hours and 30 minutes. The DSi’s battery life will last
anywhere between 3 hours and 14 hours, depending on what the console is used
for.
The bottom line is that though Nintendo was already one of
the best on the handheld market, the DSi can be an even ruthless adversary for
the PSP Slim. The battle for total domination of portable gaming hasn’t been
won yet, and after this big step forward for the tiny DS everybody is waiting the
response Playstation will give regarding this new exciting turn of events.
