Facebook released today the new 2.0 version of its iPhone
app, which is designed to significantly boost its appeal. The company prepared
an update meant to transfer most of the functionality of the full Facebook
version on to the mobile device by adding several new features.
The 2.0 includes friend requests, notifications, message
attachments, inbox search, people search, photo tagging, photo captioning and
full News/Mini Feeds. The new features were requested by many users as there
were several problems and miscommunications between the users of the iPhone app
and Facebook’s members that used a regular browser, with one of them being that
the messages didn’t display the attachments.
The 1.1 version of the app was considered a disappointment
for most iPhone users, who were anticipating an updated version.
This is just one of the many apps available in Apple’s App
Store. The service turned out to be extremely successful, and even though most
of the applications are free, it managed to bring in more than $30 million in
its first month and it is still going strong. Even though it was initially
created as a service meant to boost the sales of the iPhone, it seems to be
doing very well on its own.
There have been some issues caused by the company’s policy
to decide which apps enter the store and which get blocked. The selection takes
into consideration a series of factors and some developers are frustrated that
their work is not appreciated. Apple is being criticized for its selection
process that should be a lot more transparent.
