Two Critical Mass riders were arrested after three
protesting cyclists beat a motorist driving a Subaru station wagon during the
Critical Mass bike ride in Seattle last Friday. The two are accusing the police
of not investigating the driver's role in the incident. John Lawson, 24, and
David Maxwell, 23, were called Wednesday to a King County Jail courtroom for a
procedural hearing. None of them has been charged in the incident. The police
are still looking for the third.
A large group of cyclists taking part in the rally blocked
14th Avenue East and East Aloha Street on Seattle's Capitol Hill. The Subaru
driver was caught in the rally and apparently refused to wait, going back and
forward with the car into at least two riders.
The cyclists claim that the motorist was very aggressive and
irritated by the situation, while the latter claims he was in a state of panic and
didn’t want to hit anybody with the car. Riders attacked the man's Subaru
station wagon because he tried to run away from the scene. He was dragged out
of the car and hit in the head with a bicycle lock.
Although both sides played a role in escalating the Seattle
incident, these monthly parades are beginning to be regarded as being too
aggressive by motorists, pedestrians and even other cyclists. The local papers
and blogs have condemned the Critical Mass - and the consensus might lead to an
end of such Critical Masses in Seattle.
"I'm really sorry that anyone
got hurt and I'm glad no one was hurt seriously," said Mark, the driver of
the white Subaru. "I'm really sorry for all that happened.”
