The latest Mike Myers film, ‘The Love Guru’ made its debut today. It’s pretty hard for me to say that I hate a Mike Myers movie, because I know that the over the top jokes and characters are intended to be that way, and that Myers is completely aware of the fact that he is creating kitsch situations.
But this is the beauty of a Mike Myers film. He manages to take comedy back to its roots and is conscious of the fact that he is situated at the exact opposite pole from Woody Allen’s extremely intellectual comedies. Mike Myers is a buffoon, but doesn’t want to be anything else, and is extremely honest in what he does.
Mike Myers plays Guru Pitka, an American who has been raised by a Hindu guru, who is asked by the Maple Leafs owner (Jessica Alba) to help the team’s star player get back together with his wife, who left him for L.A. Kings Canadian goalkeeper (Justin Timberlake). In the mean time, Guru Pitka gets hooked on the club’s owner, and uses his charm to gain her heart.
What I don’t like about ‘The Love Guru’ is the fact that it recycles some old jokes from the Austin Powers series. Remember the scene in the ‘Goldmember’ when Austin cannot help himself making fun of the mole on a fellow agent’s face?
Well in his latest movie he does the same, only that this time the mole issue is replaced by the Maple Leaf’s coach’s dwarfism, who is played by Verne Troyer (Mini-Me).
