When you take a look at this week’s Billboard Top 10, you
can’t be sure whether you’re in the music industry or in Disneyland.
And that is mostly due to the Jonas Brothers. The new album of the teen rock
trio, “A Little Bit Longer,” opened at No.1, selling 525,000 copies, according
to Nielsen SoundScan.
The experts in the music industry had expressed even
bigger hopes for the album, but it’s still the third in the top of the highest
sales figures in 2008, being surpassed only by Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter
III" (1,006,000) and Coldplay's "Viva La Vida or Death and All His
Friends" (721,000). But wait, it gets better than this for the teen group!
Their last release, “Jonas Brothers” (Hollywood)
occupied the 10th place in the top with 31,000 in sales.
This is the
first time a group has had two concurrent top 10 albums since ‘N Sync’s success
in 1999, with the album “’N Sync” at No.2 and “Home For Christmas” at No.10.
The Jonas Brothers are also the second sibling act to top the charts since the
Bee Gees did in the 1970s.
Moreover, the soundtrack to Disney’s “Camp Rock,”
which features the Jonas boys, landed at No.8, with sales of 50,000, which
means a 6 percent gain.
Moving further into the Disneyfied Billboard top, we find
tween queen Miley Cyrus, who has toured with the Jonas bros, at No.4, with
“Breakout” (Hollywood),
which sold 85,000 copies.
As for the Billboard top positions that were not conquered
by Disney teens, we have the soundtrack to “Mamma Mia!” at No.2 with 110,000 in
sales, which means a 16 percent drop. Kid Rock’s “Rock and Roll Jesus” climbs
from No.4 to No.3, with 101,000, replacing Sugarland’s “Love on the Inside,”
which falls to No.5. Lil Wayne’s hit album “Tha Carter III” also falls one
position lower, at No.6, with 62,000, while Coldplay’s “Viva la Vida” falls
from No.6 to No.7.
Rihanna is the only one to maintain her No.9 spot for a
second week, with 42,000.
