A novel with Islamic themes, whose release was canceled by
Random House last month, has been picked up by publishers in 10 countries, the
author’s agent announced on Wednesday.
Random House, a unit of Bertelsmann AG, was due to publish
“The Jewel of Medina,” a debut novel by journalist Sherry Jones, 46, on August
12.
The 432-page book portrays the life of A’isha, Prophet Muhammad’s
child bride, from the time she was 6 and got engaged to Muhammad and until the
prophet’s death.
Random House withdrew the novel, claiming that it had
received “cautionary advice not only that the publication of this book might be
offensive to some in the Muslim community, but also that it could incite acts
of violence by a small, radical segment.”
However, settlements have been reached with another U.S. publisher, as well as publishers in Britain, Brazil,
Germany, Italy, Russia,
Spain
and other countries, according to Sherry Jones’ literary agent Natasha Kern.
British publishing house Gibson Square announced on Wednesday that
it would release “The Jewel of Medina,” saying it was “imperative” for the
novel written by Sherry Jones to be available to the public.
In addition to this, the founder of Gibson Square, who described the novel as
“a meticulously researched love story of the Prophet Muhammad,” said that the
publishing house would release up to 20,000 English copies next month. “As an
independent publishing company, we feel strongly that we should not be afraid
of the consequences of debate,” he added.
Sherry Jones told Reuters that an announcement regarding the
U.S.
publisher would be made next week.
Although no official release date has been revealed, Natasha
Kern said that “The Jewel of Medina” would be available in book stores in most
of western Europe and North America in
mid-October.
