There has been a lot of talk and debate regarding the effects of the Internet and other modern communication methods and the general trend was to believe that though there are so many ways to communicate with others, people are getting more and more isolated. This theory was generally applied to families.

Yesterday, the conclusions of a survey dealing with exactly this issue were released and as it turns out, the Internet and mobile phones are actually tightening the relation between family members. This means that family life has not been weakened by new technology and that the concept of “family” is not slowly transforming into something else, something bad.

The results of the survey showed that 60% of adults said that the Internet and mobile phones don’t affect the ties that keeps their families together, 25% percent declared that the new technology actually helps in keeping the bonds between family members and only 11% said that they were affected by the new technology in a negative way.

The study shows that the Internet and the use of the mobile phone actually does what is supposed to do, which is keep people together, make communication more accessible. Cell phones and Internet connections were most widespread in traditional, two-parent households and the results of the poll show that 94% of the cases at least one adult used the Internet and that 84% of children use the Internet.

Overall, this study shows that the Internet and cell phones are not a threat to family life as they were believed to be. Results also show that 42% of parents with children aging between 7 and 17 call their offspring at least once a day and that 7% communicate through text messages.
