The Guild Will Be Distributed Via Microsoft

Microsoft has recently announced that is has gained exclusivity with the second season of the Web show The Guild, which will be the first to be distributed worldwide concurrently via Microsoft’s triple platform of Xbox 360’s Live Marketplace, MSN and Zune. The show will make its first appearance on Tuesday, on Independent Video, Xbox’s original content channel, which supports ads, as well as fee-based programs. Xbox’s main goal is to expand beyond gaming themes in order to capture a wider audience, by launching five to six programs.

The Guild’s star, creator and writer-producer, Felicia Day, has become the icon of original Web production world. Her deal with Microsoft allows her to retain the intellectual property rights to the show and collect unspecified upfront license fees. Felicia has waited for over a year to finally be able to control the creative, as well as the business side of The Guild. However, Microsoft won’t share revenue if the show goes on to TV or film, but it will retain gaming-related extensions.

Day told the media that The Guild found unintended international appeal late in its run. The show will be distributed day-and-date in nine languages in 26 countries where Xbox Live operates, reaching 14 million users. Of course, money will be earned by all those involved, Felicia Day, Microsoft and marketers, but with an added bonus for fans and future fans alike. The scripted comedy focuses on the antics of a group of online gamers and the first series of the show was broadcast on Day’s personal website. The second series will consist of 12 episodes, each 4-7 minutes in length.
