The Golden Globes Show Ratings Improvement

U.S. TV ratings for the 66th annual Golden Globe Awards showed important improvement over last year's version. NBC’s three hours broadcast of the Golden Globes ceremony attracted 14.6 million total viewers on Sunday, according to Neilsen Media Research’s early estimates, off 27% from the 20 million who tuned in back in 2007. This marks the lowest-rated Globes since NBC took over the telecast in 1996. In 2004 viewership dropped at 26.8 million.

This situation cannot compare to last year’s award announcements because of the writers strike that led to a stripped-down, one-hour telecast watched by a total of only 6 million viewers. Nevertheless, in spite of all the glamour which is naturally associated with the Golden Globes, this year’s ceremony went down more than 5 million viewers, not being able to match the ratings of two years ago, for which Nielsen reported 20 million viewers.

Limited constituencies for the movies nominated this year such as "The Reader," "Revolutionary Road" and "Slumdog Millionaire" probably were not of much help, either.

Therefore, the numbers represented the lowest Nielsen ratings for a regular Golden Globes ceremony since 1996 when NBC began airing it.

CBS easily won the Sunday night viewership battle by airing the NFL playoff game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Diego Chargers. The game garnered a 12 rating in adults 18-49 and more than 33 million viewers overall.

ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” with 13.8 million viewers came third in audience, beating the Globes during the 9 p.m. hour among adults 18-49 but nonetheless registered its lowest-ever rating for an original episode.
