Ben Stiller’s latest comedy, “The Heartbreak Kid,” proved no match for The Rock’s “The Game Plan,” debuting at No. 2 with a modest $14 million, according to preliminary studio estimates.
Comedian Ben Stiller reunited with Peter and Bobby Farrelly for a remake of the 1972 homonymous film starring Charles Grodin and Cybill Shepherd. Stiller starred alongside Michelle Monaghan, Jerry Stiller, and Carlos Mencia, while the Farrelly brothers directed.
Stiller and the Farrelly siblings have collaborated before, on 1998’s “There's Something About Mary.” While that comedy proved to be a success, the more recent DreamWorks/ Paramount film “The Heartbreak Kid” has not had the same luck, grossing only $14 million during opening weekend and sticking at No. 2, according to box office tracker Media by Numbers.
DreamWorks spokesman Chip Sullivan told the Associated Press that a more favorable welcome was expected of “The Heartbreak Kid,” especially since advance screenings showed positive reactions from audiences.
“We were surprised,” Sullivan said. “The reviews hurt us. We love the movie. We've seen it play great. But I think reviews do matter on an R-rated movie.”
“The Game Plan,” starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, retained its No. 1 position for a second consecutive week, with ticket sales worth $16.3 million, according to studio estimates Sunday, reports the AP. This raises its total to $42.8 million.
George Clooney’s legal drama “Michael Clayton,” released by Warner Bros., opened with $704,000 in limited release.
Also released this Friday, “The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising,” a fantasy action film, debuted at No. 5 with $3.7 million. The film stars Alexander Ludwig, Christopher Eccleston and Frances Conroy.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.
