This week-end’s box office figures show an interesting
feature that is essential in a movie: despite reviews or the easily-perceived
quality of the plot, it is more important to be PG-rated and to attract
children to come with their families.
This is how “The Game Plan” became number one this week-end,
selling an estimated $22.7 million in tickets and outselling thriller “The
Kingdom”, that recorded sales of $17.7 million.
The logic presented can be demonstrated easily: The Game
Plan was produced by Disney studios, while The Kingdom at Universal Pictures,
meaning that children are attracted by whatever Disney releases. Moreover, the
plot is easy and amusing, making it more facile for the kids to persuade mum,
dad and siblings to have a movie out and guaranteeing that none of them will be
bored.
This week-end’s winner movie presents the story of a NFL
quarterback that suddenly discovers that he has a 7-year old daughter and that
is what engenders the series of funny moments.
On the other hand, the next five movies are R-rated and have
a serious plot, despite bringing famous names, like Jamie Foxx and Jennifer
Garner. The Kingdom tackles the matter of a bombing in Saudi Arabia,
including also a FBI investigation. Resident Evil: Extinction brought out by
Sony Pictures' Screen Gems division was ranked the third, with only $8 million,
presenting a new battle with the walking dead.
It shouldn’t be disappointing for movie producers, there is
still time for vengeance!
