The Dalai Lama is making efforts to calm down the tensions following
Beijing’s crackdown. Apparently, on March 19, he sent a letter to China’s
President Hu Jintao, offering to contribute to the damage-control by sending
his emissaries to Tibet.
According to his special envoy Lodi Gyari, "His
Holiness expressed his deepest concerns about the situation (in Tibet) and
offered to send his emissaries to help calm the situation and explain to
Tibetans," as quoted by the AFP. The desired direction was one of a
peaceful way forward.
Unfortunately, Beijing considers the Dalai Lama a “wolf in
monk’s clothing” and branded him a separatist, considering for a very long time any discussion
useless.
The Dalai Lama, now 72 years old, has been living in
northern India for the past 49 years after fleeing Tibet. The reason was his
failed uprising mission in 1959.
The United States support the peace talks, believing that
this is the perfect time for discussions. Deputy Secretary of State John
Negroponte was quoted by AFP saying: "He is also a man of peace. The
Chinese government should seize the opportunity to talk to those Tibetans,
represented by the Dalai Lama, who oppose violence and do not seek independence
for Tibet."
EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner presented a similar solution, urging China to begin dialogue, which in his opinion
could bring a concrete improvement to the whole scenario.
The widely discussed issue managed to overshadow the fact
that China will be hosting the Olympic Games in August and surely this fact
will contribute to their decision on future actions.
