A statement released Tuesday revealed that Bill and Hilary Clinton would be the ones to push the ceremonial button that announces the descent of the giant illuminated ball in New York’s Times Square, thus ushering in the New Year.
Event organizers said that the former president and his wife, a U.S. senator from New York who is also president-elect Barack Obama’s choice for Secretary of State, would be joining New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg for the 2008 manifestations in Times Square.
Bill and Hilary Clinton are to push the button at 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday night, which will kick of the 60 second countdown that is a significant part of the yearly festivities in New York City.
For the celebrations in Times Square, the band Jonas Brothers is scheduled to make an appearance, as well, along with the par for the course throngs of revelers.
Given the number of people who will be attending the event, welcoming the New Year from the city’s signature square, the issue of safety is bound to arise, the NYPD having their hands full Wednesday night.
Nevertheless, Mayor Bloomberg announced that the police force was more than ready to take on the responsibility, adding that Times Square would be as secure as possible and that people should not spare a single thought on the matter, which according to him, has been taken care of.
A number of 1,129 cops who graduated from the Police Academy Tuesday are to be deployed in Times Square, along with counter-terror teams and Secret Service agents.
