Israel
pledged that it won’t stop the attack against the militants in the Gaza Strip
on Thursday. This comes after more than 20 people were killed in two days of violence
irrupted between the Hamas and Israel.
Deputy Prime Minister Haim Ramon said to the army radio:
"The military and economic pressure as well as the international isolation
of the Gaza Strip will end up producing results," AFP reports.
According to him, there would be no talks between the Israel
and the Hamas, who took over the Gaza Strip seven months ago and doesn’t want
to recognize the Jewish state.
Ramon said that the attacks from Israel will cease once the
militants stop firing rockets and mortars.
He said: "There is no need to negotiate with Hamas. If
the rocket firings stop, we will cease operating in the Gaza Strip. But it has
to be clear that sooner or later we will hit all those who fire the rockets."
Hamas said that it had fired 14 rockets on Thursday after on
Wednesday it had claimed that 79 rockets and mortars were launched from their
side.
On Thursday Israel
said that five of the rockets have landed on their territory, the Press
Association said.
Israel
attacked northern Gaza
with rockets launched from air and ground and aimed at areas used by militants
to fire projectiles.
Defense Minister Ehud Barak said on Wednesday night:
"We have stepped up and will further step up the pressure and the attacks
on the terror activists in the Gaza Strip, and if necessary, we will step up
the attacks even further. It isn't simple, but our goal is to stop the Qassam
rocket fire."
Civilians from Gaza
were killed during the crossfire. A teenage boy was killed along with his
father and uncle because of an Israeli missile which targeted a car driven by Islamic
Jihad gunmen, but which instead hit their car, in the Gaza City.
Khaled Meshaal, Hamas supremo, told reporters in Damascus that the tour made by the U.S. President in the Middle east "gave cover to this massacre."
He also said that the Israel
soldier held by the Gaza
militants since 2006 won’t be freed.
"After the Gaza
massacre there will be no exchange for the soldier (Gilad) Shalit."
