We all have started to suffer the
side effects of the continually progressing cell phone technology. It is not
only about the fact that we don’t communicate anymore, as we just talk, talk
and talk, but it is also about all that noise we are making when using
our mobile phones.
Everybody has started to use the
mobile phone as if it represented a device without which their lives could not
continue anymore.
People
have started to use the cellphone just because they owe it and just because
everybody owes one, two or even three mobile phones. Still, is there a deep
meaning behind all that noise?
It seems this is the question
from where the cellphone jamming story has all started. And it also seems that
the jammers’ answer to the question is “No.” For them it is just the irritating
noise of all those voices talking and talking at their cellphones about
everything. In buses, in stores, in cafés, on the street, they are talking on
the cellphone about all kinds of silly things.
This seems to have determined
some rebel souls and minds to create the cellphone jammer, a device that has
started to be used more and more. The cellphone jammer represents a device that
could block the cellphone reception. When one gets irritated about an endless
chattering, he or she uses the cellphone jammer and in just seconds the noise
is over. This way, although it represents an illegal move, the cellphone jammer
helps these people to enjoy the silence.
But according to James Katz, the Rutgers University’s Center for Mobile
Communication Studies’ head, it seems that it is the jammers’ problem after
all.
"If anything characterizes the 21st century, it's our inability to
restrain ourselves for the benefit of other people. […] The cell phone talker
thinks his rights go above that of people around him, and the jammer thinks his
are the more important rights."
So, it seems that after all it is
all about rights and responsibility and about the way we all understand these
concepts.
