The Boston Celtics Finally Get Their Rings!

The Boston Celtics are the new NBA Champions! The series ended yesterday with a 4 – 2 lead over the Los Angeles Lakers, when the Celtics won Game 6 with an amazing 131 to 92. The title was brought back to Boston after 22 years, as the team failed to even come close to the prize since the days of Larry Bird.

Even though the Celtics were considered by many the underdogs, mainly because of the Lakers’ nine-time champion coach Phil Jackson, their younger team members and the season’s MVP Kobe Bryant, the experience gathered by the team’s veterans proved to be decisive in the key moments of the games.

Boston’s Big Three managed to support each other throughout the series, also with a significant help from the rest of the players, and even if one of them had a bad night, the others would come out strong.

The 39-point difference turned out to be a new NBA record as the biggest margin of victory in a championship clincher, with a similar performance of 33 points registered also by Boston all the way back in 1965 against the Lakers.

Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen also played extraordinary, each with 26 points and Garnett also contributed with 14 rebounds. Rajon Rondo scored 21 points and Paul Pierce added 17 points and 10 assists.

After last year’s disappointing season with only 24 wins, Boston finished the 2007 – 2008 regular season with 66 wins and a play-off record of 13 home wins.

Paul Pierce was named MVP of the finals, averaging more than 21 points in the six games. The award could also be considered as a recognition of his whole career, as he has been fighting alongside the Celtics since the beginning of his career in 1998.
