The Big Night Is Coming On American Idol

The grand finale is approaching and I dare say there still are surprises that await us. Although all the polls set up on various sites inquiring about which of the Davids will win American Idol predict that David C. is the winner, I still think there are big chances left for David A.

Although I am failing to get excited about 17-year-old “Mr. Vulnerability,” I can understand that a mysterious force will drive the 13-year-old girls to vote like crazy, so that little Archie can make his demanding father proud.

Leaving aside the drama factor, I can admit one reason for which people love David Archuleta is his flawless voice. But is it enough for him to become a star? A star is made by much more than this: attitude, music style, connection with the audience, personality, sincerity. And little David does not have too many of these qualities. His age doesn’t help him too much. He certainly hasn’t completely developed his personality at the age of 17. And I don’t know if the eyes-closed-and-hand-pressed-against-the-chest style can be called attitude. He has actually been advised to drop the eyes-closed thing, but apparently, the boy couldn’t be stopped. Sincerity? Well, that is doubtful as well, after the overbearing father episode… Now nobody is sure whether little David acts on his own or is only guided by his pushy dad, who had to be kicked out from the show’s rehearsals.

David A.’s voice was especially appreciated at the beginning of the show, until people noticed that the tween’s songs all sounded the same and he completely lacked originality. So then he was surpassed by David Cook, who, according to the Dial Idol Web site led the race in the rounds of 10, 7, 6, 4 and also last week’s round 3.

Probably the show’s viewers started noticing that David C.’s songs varied more than Archie’s and that the 25-year-old tried at least to be spontaneous as often as he could. David C. might only be a rocker-wannabe and he might have missed notes in his songs, but he certainly has more charm and confidence than David A. You can tell he is more easy-going and he will not be much affected if he doesn’t win, but it’s a different story for David A., who always looks scared and tense in front of the judges, although they have been praising him like nuts.

So, it’s gonna be a tough decision to make on Tuesday night: the sugar tween or the emo-pretending-to-be-tough rocker?
