A 44-pound cat found on the streets of New Jersey was abandoned by a woman who
claimed that her home was foreclosed, an animal shelter official announced on
Thursday.
Donna Oklatner, aged 65, got in touch with the
Camden County Animal Shelter to report that she was the owner of the overweight
cat found in Voorhees, N.J., dubbed “Prince Chunk.” However, the
woman explained she could not afford to take the feline back after losing her
house. Chunk’s former owner failed to keep up with the mortgage payments and
said that she was “heartbroken” about having to give up her cat, whose real
name is actually Powder, as reported by the New York Daily News. Whatever the
kitty’s name is, he probably is the most popular feline of the nation at this
point.
Donna Oklatner hopes for ex-Powder to be placed in a loving
home, which seems very likely, since the Camden County Animal Shelter has
already received more than 100 adoption offers, according to the Associated
Press.
“We will look at the applications and decide which is the
best home,” Jennifer Anderch said, shelter director and “spokesperson” for the
chubby cat.
Shelter officials informed MyFOXPhilly.com that Prince Chunk
was brought to the shelter after Animal Control found him outdoors without wearing
a collar.
What’s more, the Prince’s gender has been under serious
discussion since he was found last week. Officials originally believed the cat
was a male, and nicknamed him “Captain Chunk”, but then realized he was a she, deciding
on the “Princess” label. Nonetheless, on Thursday, a veterinarian confirmed
that the cat was a male, as initially thought, and Prince Chunk it was.
Shelter officials had no alternative but to use a dog scale in
order to weigh the cat, who is only a couple of pounds wispier than the
heaviest cat on record, a 46-pound, 15-ounce tabby who lived in Australia and
died in the 1980s.
