Thailand Initiates Product Tests In Melamine Scandal

The Asian country is taking every measure of protection against the melamine spread in a number of milk-based products made in China.

While waiting for laboratory analysis, all the newly imported milk powder from China has been impounded by Thailand's Food and Drug Administration in ports all around the country.

FDA secretary-general Pipat Yingseri says that this is just a precautionary measure. "This doesn't mean that the items are contaminated," he states. "We just want to make sure that there will not be contamination before releasing it for sale to the public."

Nearly 100 products imported from China or made with Chinese milk are currently being tested by the Thai government. At least 15 companies were found to be using melamine infected milk, while 65 others were cleared, but that doesn’t mean that traces of the chemical weren’t found.

Thailand's legal limit is of 1 milligram of melamine per kilogram, which means that if a product contains less than that, it is considered nonthreatening to human health. The officials say that melamine may be found in such small amounts, due to accidental exposure in the making process, which is acceptable.

For example, powdered milk from Shuangwa Dairy Co. was cleared for sale in Thailand, as tests only found melamine levels of 0.38 milligrams per kilogram and 0.55 milligrams per kilogram, way under the alarming dosage. 32 other Chinese-made products that were tested and showed no trace of melamine were also cleared, including M&Ms, Snickers bars, Oreo wafer sticks and Dove Milk Chocolate Bars, the FDA said.

While the European Union last week banned imports of baby food containing Chinese milk, other tainted products were found in European countries, as well as the U.S., especially in Chinese restaurants, China Towns and Asian food markets.

The source of the contamination still remains unknown, but a number of suspects, all of them in the milk-producing business, managers of pastures, breeding farms and milk-purchasing stations, were arrested.

Of course, their reason for adding a highly dangerous chemical to baby formula is money. The suppliers are suspected of adding melamine, a compound rich in nitrogen, in order to deceive quality tests for protein in watered-down milk.

The melamine craze first began when four infants died and over 54,000 children have become ill after drinking contaminated baby formula. Although the chemical was first found in powdered infant formula, it has since been traced to dozens of other products, ranging from yogurt to candy to pastries.

Melamine is commonly used in coatings and laminates, wood adhesives, fabric coatings, ceiling tiles and flame retardants. It is no wonder that a product used in constructions is that toxic, especially for babies and young children. Doctors say that ingesting melamine can lead to kidney stones, urinary tract ulcers, and eye and skin irritation, and in some cases it may lead to death.
