Roger Stone, the sixth Texas member from the “Cynthia Woods” boat
was found dead Sunday afternoon.
According to CNN, the Coast Guard said that his body was
found by a crew about 27 miles southeast of Freeport. The other five members from Texas A&M
University were rescued
earlier Sunday. Four of them were students and the other one was a safety
officer.
Stone was the boat’s second safety officer and he helped two
students escape from the boat, before it capsized.
USGS Capt. William Diehl said that the vessel was filled
with water very fast and than it “flipped over,” reported CNN. “Cynthia Woods”
was taking part in the annual Veracruz Regatta race, which began Friday.
Diehl also said that, although the boat had emergency radio
beacons, life rafts and other safety equipment, only four life jackets were
found after the boat capsized. The members from the boat said that, because
there were only 4 life jackets and five of them, they had to take turns and also stay together in order not to drown.
The Coast Guard reported that the vessel probably went
missing Friday, around midnight, and it was found Saturday around 5 p.m.
According to CNN, the survivors were found Sunday morning,
about 23 miles south of Freeport,
Texas. They were transported to University of Texas Medical
Branch in Galveston.
Diehl said that the keel, which was supposed to keep the boat’s balance, was
missing, causing the vessel to take in water.
The other boats from the Veracruz Regatta race are going to return to Veracruz on Wednesday and Thursday.
