Tejano Singer In Critical Condition After Car Crash

Grammy award-winning Tejano superstar Emilio Navaira was rushed to the hospital where his current condition is critical after his band bus crashed near Houston on Sunday.

The crash occurred on the West Loop near Highway 59 at around 5 a.m. on Sunday when Navaira’s bus collided with two other vehicles. Eight people were transported to Ben Taub and Memorial Hermann hospitals. Their medical conditions weren't immediately known.

"Our current understanding is that Emilio suffered serious head injuries and surgery was performed this morning where a blood clot was removed from his brain.
He is presently in guarded condition in intensive care," Navairo’s agent, Joe Casias, was quoted by khou.com as saying in a statement.

"We ask his friends and fans for their prayers during this difficult time and we will release more information as it is available."

While some of the patients have already been treated and released, Memorial Hermann Hospital administrator Lisa Lagrone said Navaira, who was driving the bus, is in critical condition. The 45-year-old singer underwent surgery for a head injury and is now in intensive care.

Born in San Antonion, Navaira, who earned a music scholarship in Texas in his early days, released numerous successful albums together with his band Rio, including "Acuerdate" which got him the 2003 Grammy for best Tejano album.
