A teenage passenger has been arrested in Tennessee for plotting to hijack a
commercial jetliner in an attempt to commit suicide, an FBI representative said
on Thursday.
The plane was flying from Los Angeles,
California, to Nashville, Tennessee.
The 16-year-old boy was removed Southwest Airlines Flight 284 on Tuesday night
at Nashville international airport and found with “suspicious” items, FBI
representative George Bolds told the Associated Press.
“His plan had a low probability of success,” Bolds said.
Bolds added that the teenager was in possession of
handcuffs, rope and duct tape in his bag and believed he wanted to commit
suicide.
Nashville television stations,
quoting unnamed sources, said the teen, whose name was not released, tried to
hijack the plane to Lafayette,
La., and crash it into a building
where a “Hannah Montana” concert was to be performed, but he had no success,
the AP reports.
Emily Richards, airport representative confirmed there was
an incident but she would not provide any information as the teenager was a
minor.
The teen is currently held on unspecified state charges at
Davidson County Juvenile Detention Centre and could face federal charges, as
the case is resolved. He is expected to appear Friday in Juvenile Court, Bolds
said.
Bolds said the teen indicated he had lived in Louisiana. His parents
were unaware of his intention of traveling by plane.
