Gizmodo posted pictures of what is supposed to be the new Android "G2,” Wednesday and also announced the device is expected to be officially unveiled in May.
The new device is much thinner than the previous G1 because its slide keyboard is gone. Pictures of the new G2 also show that it will have a 3.2 megapixel camera. The new phone will operate on T-Mobile USA's network, and the interface will be "very similar" to the G1, according to Gizmodo's sources. It appeared that this G2 comes in white but options remain open until we find out something for sure.
T-Mobile released the original G1 in October, marking the only Android-based device on the market. The T-Mobile G1 was a shot across the bow of the Apple iPhone 3G, which dominated the touch-screen smartphone scene. Since the iPhone's release, several other touch-screen titans hit stores, including the G1 and BlackBerry's first-ever touch screen, the BlackBerry Storm. The T-Mobile G1 was vaulted to success, mainly because it was the first to feature Android, and quickly became one of the coolest smartphones of 2008.
Rumors have already been flying around the internet about which manufacturers will be next with their Android phones. So far, manufacturers like Garmin, Motorola, NTT DoCoMo, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and others have been said to be readying Android-based devices.
In the meantime German Deutsche Telekom's wireless unit T-Mobile will begin selling its G1 phone, which has been available in Britain and the United States since October, in several European countries in coming weeks. "We will introduce the G1 by January 30 in the Netherlands, Czech Republic and Austria," T-Mobile Chief Executive Hamid Akhavan said on Monday.
