A Florida
teacher resigned and could face criminal charges after a cell phone video
showing him wrestling one of his students surfaced.
Stephen Berry said that the wrestle, which happened during class
at a middle school in Clermont, was friendly and playful, but admitted that it was
not appropriate. The video later shows another student who grabbed the same boy
by the neck, in another attempt to wrestle. The teacher has no intention of
stopping the fight.
Stephen M. Berry, 39, is a former mayor and Town Council member
of Montverde. Even though he resigned immediately after the video surfaced, school
officials are still questioning him about the situation.
Lake County Superintendent Anna Cowin said she was conducting
her own investigation on the teacher’s behaviour, as it could have been “a lack
of judgment or something worse.”
The scandal started Friday, after a parent brought the video
to school and showed it to James Braucher, an assistant principal at Clermont
Middle.
Assistant State Attorney Bill Gladson said his office would
review the video and the witnesses’ statements, in order to decide whether
criminal charges were appropriate.
