"Twilight" Fans received great news on Thursday as director Chris Weitz announced that young actor Taylor Lautner, who played Jacob Black in the "Twilight" movie, will not be replaced.
Ending weeks of confusion and speculation among fans of the hit vampire romance, author Stephenie Meyer was happy to confirm that Taylor Lautner is set to reprise his role as Jacob Black in "New Moon," the upcoming flick based on the second novel in Meyer’s best selling series.
"The characters in Stephenie's books go through extraordinary changes of circumstance and also appearance; so it is not surprising that there has been speculation about whether the same actor would portray a character who changes in so many surprising ways throughout the series," the moviemaker's letter read.
Although Lautner's role was relatively small in "Twilight," his character Jacob Black becomes a main part of the plot as Bella Swan is drawn to him and his world of shapeshifters. Rumors that Lautner would be replaced for the second movie started because Jacob Black goes through major physical changes which the 16-year-old actor could not be subjected to.
"Jacob is a totally different character in New Moon," Melissa Rosenberg, screenwriter of both Twilight films, told EW. "He's a foot taller and huge – and he's supposed to look 25. It's really a question of whether or not the same actor can play the role."
Lautner met with Weitz recently, and also screen-tested with co-star Kristen Stewart, who signed on to play Bella Swan, to see if the two would have chemistry in the updated roles and it turns out that Weitz always believed that "Taylor was, is, and should be Jacob."
"I think that fans of Twilight the book and the movie will be surprised by the Jacob Black that Taylor will bring to the screen in New Moon; and I'm looking forward to working with him and the rest of the cast in realizing the film," Weitz said.
In the meantime, Lautner is training hard to pack on 19 pounds of muscle and promising to add 10 more before shooting starts in March. "My job for New Moon is completely different," he said in a recent interview. "I've been looking forward to that. I've been getting ready for it, and I can assure them I will follow through with that."
