Friday, two Afghans who were accused of spying for the United States
were publicly executed by Taliban militants. The Taliban slit their throats in
front of thousands of people.
According to Reuters, the two men were blindfolded and were
brought in front of a crowd near Damadole, a village in the Bajaur region, near
the Afghan border. They were executed there. Apparently, one of them was a
former Taliban fighter.
Qari Zia-ur-Rehman, a Taliban leader told the thousands of
people gathered there that the two men were spies, warning that “whoever spies
for the Americans will meet the same fate,” reported Reuters. The Taliban
blamed the two men that they released information to U.S.
forces in Afghanistan,
causing a missile strike on May 14. The attack caused the death of about 18
people.
After the execution the crowd began shouting “Allahu Akbar”
meaning God is Greatest. Also, shortly after the execution ended, several shots
were heard. Apparently two people were killed and others were injured. The
shots were fired from someone who was in the crowd, reported AFP.
In May, two missiles were fired by U.S. drones.
Officials said that the attack was against an Al Qaeda member.
This is not the first time that Taliban militants
have killed people who were thought to be spies for U.S. but this kind of public execution
doesn’t happen often.
