Two new models of T-mobile’s famous Sidekick phone have emerged recently, and they deserve all the attention.
T-mobile USA has come up with some pretty attractive Sidekicks this fall, one of them included in the high-end category and the other in the mainstream.
The modification worth mentioning first is related to the producer: if until now the Sidekicks were in Sharp’s back yard, now Motorola is involved too, being the one that manufactures the Sidekick Slide.
Speaking of Slide, this is the cheaper model, with a price of only $200 for a two year contract with T-mobile. It boasts with a higher resolution screen at 320x240 pixels and 65,000 colors, but has a lousy 1.3Mpx camera that cannot record videos. In addition to that Motorola designed a slimmer SlideKick, which is now 4.6 inches wide by 2.6 inches high by 0.6 inch deep and weighs 5.3 ounces. The Sidekick Slide has all the features that ensured the previous generation’s success, including personal T-mail account, support for POP3 and IMAP e-mail, integrated AIM, Windows Live, and Yahoo instant messaging clients, plus text and multimedia messaging.
SlideKick operates as a quad-band phone and as a small portable media center, being able to play MP3 and AAC files stored on a microSD card and even play videos from the Web, thanks to the improved Web-browser with JavaScript support. Slated for a November 7 launch in the US, the Sidekick Slide communicates wirelessly with other devices through the Bluetooth connection and is compatible with the recently launched MySpace Mobile application (a separate download).
The high-end Sidekick is dubbed LX and has basically the same dimensions as the Sidekick 3, but is a bit lighter (5.7 ounces) and boasts with an enhanced 3-inch, 65,000-color TFT display and 400x240 pixel resolution. The phone comes in two flavors: midnight blue and espresso brown and for the $300 you’ll have to pay to have it (of course, with a two year subscription) you can program the gadget to light up when you receive an e-mail or an SMS. Besides that, you can enjoy the same messaging features included in Sidekick Slide and the Bluetooth connectivity, plus the MySpace Mobile compatibility. The microSD expansion slot, the music player and the Web-browser are also present, while the battery for Sidekick LX is said to last 6.8 hours.
Sidekick LX’ debut is slated for October 27 in the US.
With a HotSpotAtHome plan, which costs $20 a month, subscribers can place unlimited calls over Wi-Fi routers at home or on T-Mobile's commercial HotSpot network.
