Rene Obermann, Deutsche Telekom chief executive, announced that
the company has sold so far more than 100,000 iPhones in Germany. The
announcement was made during Deutsche Telekom’s annual meeting and Hamid Akhavan,
Deutsche Telekom's board member at
T-Mobile, confirmed for Dow Jones Newswires that the sales figures are in line
with the company’s internal targets.
Last month T-Mobile, the mobile arm of Deutsche Telekom, announced
that the 8GB version of iPhone, will be sold for 99 euros as a part of a
promotion that runs from April 7 to June 30. Through this promotion T-Mobile
hopes to win new customers, but in order to obtain this price they will have to
sign up for a two-year contract that offers an 89 euros monthly plan.
Additionally, T-Mobile offers three other contracts:
Complete S under which iPhone costs 249 while the monthly price is 29 euros,
Complete M, through which the consumers can buy the iPhone for 199 euros and a
monthly price of 49 euros, and Complete L, with the iPhone priced at 149 euros
and a 69 euros monthly price. Meanwhile the price of the 16 GB version will
remain unchanged, and the phone will be sold for 499 euros.
T-Mobile’s decision to offer the iPhone for these prices was
seen as an indication that the new version, the 3G iPhone, will be soon
launched in Europe.
Last year, speaking about the 3G iPhone, Steve Jobs noted that
this kind of device will need a new battery, but he didn’t give any details. According
to the some rumors the new iPhone could be slightly different from the first
version.
It is widely believed that Steve Jobs will announced the 3G
iPhone during his WWDC keynote, scheduled for Monday, June 9 at Moscone West.
Apple is currently expanding its market all over the world,
and over the past months, it went on from an exclusive deal with one carrier to
deals with European carriers, who brought the iPhone in U.K., Germany
and France in November 2007
and to Ireland and Australia
in March 2008.
Also, earlier the month, Vodafone revealed its agreement
with Apple to introduce the iPhone to ten more markets: Australia, the Czech
Republic, Egypt,
Greece, Italy, India,
Portugal, New Zealand, South
Africa and Turkey. Earlier this week, it was
announced that other carriers (SingTel, Bharti Airtel, Globe and Optus) are
ready to bring the iPhone to Singapore,
India, Philippines and Australia.
Two days ago, Apple announced that the iPhone is no longer
available on its online stores in U.K.
and U.S.,
without giving any insight on whether it plans to restock.
