CBS has announced that they have big plans with TV.com, a video streaming line, their desire being to make the site on e of the top destination when t comes down to streaming videos on the net. CBS is expected to announce content deals with MGM, PBS, Showtime, Sony, and Endemol USA (producers of shows such as "Deal or No Deal" and "Fear Factor") to add popular shows to its online video streaming site.
TV.com tries to stand out in what seems like a sea of similar sites, by adding some powerful social features. TV.com users will be able to create playlists of their favorite shows, comment, create blogs, discuss on forums and, basically, interact with one another in a very exciting way.
The problem with this is that TV.com will be another social networking site, and there quite a few of those around as well. What should be done is combine all of these sites under some sort of huge umbrella. In this way a person will not be needed to have several virtual identities on different social networking sites.
There are such initiatives around, materialized in Facebook Connect and Open ID, but it will be a while before these really catch on.
TV.com will probably enjoy some success, it will deliver the goal of being a totally decent video streaming site with social interacting features, but it will not bring anything new to the entire scene of similar sites.
The question is why would anyone bother with creating another account to do things that can easily be done on other sites?
