TV: “True Blood” Could Prove To Be Vital For HBO

It seems that humans really are fascinated by non-human creatures. We always seek for out-of-this-world explanations and beings, such as zombies, werewolves and, of course, vampires. Since we cannot find them (or who truly discovered them is not among the living anymore), we invent them and deliver them in fictional forms. From the Scooby Doo cartoons to the “Twilight” bestselling series of novels, the human mind strives to conceive products as non-human as possible. And the idea appeals to everybody.

So it doesn’t come as a surprise that “Six Feet Under” mastermind Alan Ball created yet another supernatural drama dealing with both the living and the dead, based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris.

“True Blood,” due to premiere on Sunday at 9 p.m. on HBO, blends an earthly world filled with unearthly beings. In an undetermined moment in the future, the Japanese have managed to create synthetic blood and vampires are not forced to chase humans anymore in order to suck the vital liquid. They have been “out of the coffin” for two years and, as a minority, they are fighting for civil rights like African-Americans or homosexuals did before them.

While vampires are going all-out to integrate in the society, some humans hunger after their blood, known as the “V-juice,” for its impressive healing powers.

Sookie Stackhouse, played by Academy Award-winner Anna Paquin, is a waitress in a Louisiana town. However, she’s not an ordinary person, as she has telepathic powers and can read other humans’ thoughts, a quality that she hates. She nonetheless finds someone (or something) whose mind she cannot enter.

Thus, Sookie falls for Bill (Stephen Moyer), who proves to be, evidently, a vampire, a 173-year-old vampire, more precisely. Their lives become complicated from this certain point, as a rare type of connection is forged between them.

How deep the series will echo depends almost totally on how the plot turns out to be. However, “True Blood” definitely shows potential and it would not surprise me if it proved to be a real icebreaker.
