TV Series Review: “Lie to Me”

The pilot of the “Lie to Me” drama will be broadcast by Fox from the Imagine TV stable. The new TV series have Tim Roth on their side, playing Dr. Cal Lightman, a scientist who has spent a lot of time studying the behavior of people who lie through facial expressions and gestures.

“Lie to Me” seems to be promising a lot of good things for Fox. It may bring credibility, audience, ratings and money. And with Roth as the main character, the series will surely attract a lot of fans.

The pilot introduces Dr. Cal Lightman, whose eyes and senses have turned into some lies detectors, after all the intense studies made on this human deed. He can also detect jealousy, sadness and all the bad emotions that can happen to someone. In addition, Dr. Lightman uses all these qualities to help the government and the police in the local cases.

Dr. Gillian Foster, a psychologist interpreted by Kelli Williams, is Dr. Lightman’s partner together with researcher Eli Loker, played by Brendan Hines and deception detector Ria Torres, whose character was given to Monica Raymund.

As to introduce the atmosphere of the future episodes, the first case given to Lightman to analyze is that of a murder victim whose killer isn’t the one suspected by the police. Yet, the script written by Samuel Baum doesn’t exactly offer too many details on how the team figures out who is the responsible for the murder.

But there are some interesting stylistic details drawn very carefully, which fill the series with an intriguing mystery. The producers believe that Roth is the main point of attraction of “Lie to Me,” as his character is just the kind of jerk who thinks himself to be superior to the others, just like “House.”
