Syria Is Investigating Hezbollah Commander’s Death

Syria said it will present “irrefutable” proof of who is responsible for the death of Hezbollah commander Imad Mughniyeh, who was killed Tuesday by a car bomb by Israeli agents in Damascus.

Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem didn’t mention anything about the current investigation.

Iranian TV has shown a video which allegedly depicts Tuesday’s bombing.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah put the blame on Israel for the bomb and said that he was ready for “open war.”

The claims were rejected by Israel, but even so it has warned its embassies and other official interests abroad fearing of reprisals.

Moualem said after his meeting with his Iranian counterpart in Damascus that many resources of the Syrian security services were engaged in the investigation and that soon the killer will be unmasked.

He said on Thursday: "As a state, we will irrefutably prove the party involved in this crime and who stands behind it. An investigation is ongoing. We hope that you will soon hear the results of this mighty effort," BBC News reports.

He refused to comment upon the situation of the investigation.

He added: "The fighter Imad Mughniyeh was the target of lots of intelligence agencies. He was a backbone of the Islamic resistance."

Moualem also said that Mughniyeh's death ended any effort to peace between Syria and Israel.

The Iranian Arabic-language TV channel, al-Alam, broadcasted Friday morning an alleged footage of Tuesday’s bombing.

It appeared as a car, which was booby trapped and parked next to Mughniyeh's vehicle, exploded. According to the video, the bomb was triggered by remote control.

Sheikh Nasrallah addressed the crowd in Beirut gathered at Mughniyeh's funeral saying: "The blood of Imad Mughniyeh will make them [Israel] withdraw from existence."

Moughniyah was believed to be the commander of Islamic Jihad, a group which appeared in the 1980s in Lebanon.
