Suu Kyi Says That She Will Cooperate with Junta

On Thursday Aung San Suu Kyi said in a statement that she is prepared to cooperate with the military rulers of Myanmar. The statement was released by the special UN envoy.

She said: “In the interest of the nation I stand ready to cooperate with the government in order to make this process of dialogue a success,” Guardian Unlimited quoted.

Ibrahim Gambari met Suu Kyi for an hour before he left from Myanmar. The statement was read by Mr. Gambari in Yangon and afterwards he left for Singapore.

She also said that she will let the “policies and wishes” of her party, guide her and due to the political crisis of her country she must give “constant and serious considerations to the interests and opinions of as broad a range of political organizations and forces as possible, in particular those of our ethnic nationality.”

Earlier the government announced that it will allow Suu Kyi to meet on Friday with her party officials. This will be the first meeting of such kind in three years.

Aung Kyi will be the one that will make the arrangements for the meeting.

Gambari left satisfied from his trip to Myanmar. He said that in his six-day trip to Myanmar he had succeeded in promoting a dialogue between the junta and the opposition.

Before today there was a probability that Gambari won’t be successful in his trip.

According to Guardian Unlimited Gambari received an invitation from the Myanmar government to come again in the next few weeks. “The sooner such a dialogue can start, the better for Myanmar,” said a statement posted on the website of the U.N. Information Center

Suu Kyi’s statement was the first one of its kind since she has been detained.
She met with Gambari in order to discuss issues that aim at national reconciliation, which the UN has been urging in order to end the impasse on democratic reform in the country.
