A pathologist’s report presented to the coroner during a hearing on Thursday shows that the late husband of singer Corinne Bailey Rae, saxophonist Jason Rae, died from a suspected drugs overdose, BBC News reports.
Deputy Assistant Coroner Roger Chapman said a pathologist’s report presented during an inquest in Leeds on Thursday pointed to a “suspected drugs overdose,” BBC News reports. Further tests are needed, he added.
During the short hearing at Leeds Coroner’s Court, Det Supt Steve Payne said there were no signs of trauma or violence or any significant natural disease signs, according to BBC News.
The body of Scottish-born Jason Rae, 31, a saxophonist with funk band the Haggis Horns, was found in a flat in the Hyde Park area of Leeds on Saturday afternoon.
A 32-year-old man arrested on suspicion of supplying controlled drugs has been bailed pending further inquiries.
The inquest was adjourned Thursday while further investigations continue. The musician’s body was released in order for the funerary arrangements to proceed, the BBC adds.
Singer Corinne Bailey Rae met her husband while working at a jazz club in the city and they married in 2001.
Her record label, EMI, released a statement saying: “EMI Records would like to offer its sincere condolences to Corinne Bailey Rae and the Rae family at this tragic time. We ask that the media respects Corinne's privacy and that of her entire family.”
British paper The Mirror previously reported Rae’s parents traveled from their home in Aberdeen to Leeds to support Corinne, 28. A family friend told the paper: “Jason and Corinne were always so busy, but you would not believe how close they all are. His parents are distraught and want to help Corinne.”
The couple had reportedly bought a house in Leeds just six months ago.
Rae’s band, The Haggis Horns, have played as a backing band for Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson and Bailey Rae herself.
Results of a post mortem performed on the sax player were inconclusive. Police now await results of toxicology tests.
